State School Board Takes a Pay Cut

A small side bar article in the Davis section of the Standard Examiner caught my eye yesterday. Leave it to a Weber County resident to help the state save some money.  State School Board member and Hooper resident, Greg Haws, made a recommendation to cut their annual stipend by 3.6 percent and the novel idea of using the Internet to distribute agenda's and other information.  Total savings will be over $4,000 a year.

I found it interesting, by law the State School Board can not be forced to cut costs.  However they [the State School Board] has made the recommendation to cut themselves voluntarily.   Thanks Mr. Haws for looking at ways to save money.

I am curious as to why this didn't make into the Weber County edition of the paper.

Do we know exactly what school board members are paid? I looked and shows that Haws makes 3500 dollars a year. Can this be right?

That is about right, they only get a $3,000 a year stipend for being on the board. It is not a full time job. However they also get reimbursed for travel and other expenses. I am thinking all of that would be calculated in their pay. Interestingly Greg Haws has asked they limit travel to save even more money.

WOW!!! 3% of 3000 dollars is 90 dollars. Sounds like a political stunt to me. I do appreciate him trying to cut cost but 90 dollars isnt much. Now when he runs for a different office he can talk about how he took a pay cut. 90 dollars is hardly news worthy.

Good point, Overall with 15 members it comes over $1400 plus the other savings of nearly $4000. So $5000+ I think is not to bad for a board that is not required to cut. But your right, not a big savings.
